Evacuation for Individuals with Disabilities

Under accessibility laws in the Province of Ontario, employers must work with their employees with disabilities to ensure they have access to individualized workplace emergency response information.

This information must be reviewed if and when:

  • The individual moves offices;
  • The individual’s overall accommodation changes; and/or
  • There is an update to general emergency response information.

The employer also has an obligation to provide public safety information in an accessible format or with communication supports upon request.

If you are a person with a disability, you can discuss your individualized emergency response information with your manager or your human resource representative.

Emergency Evacuation Points at Scarborough Campus

At the University of Toronto Scarborough, Emergency Evacuation Points have been strategically located throughout the campus as points where people needing assistance can gather. Every sign has a location code which consists of a letter and one or two numbers. These indicate the Wing the person is in, the floor level, and the location of the sign.

In the event of a fire or other emergency persons who cannot gain access to an outside exit should stage themselves at one of the evacuation points and have Campus Safety advised of their location. This can be done in one of three ways:

  • Have a responsible person tell Campus Safety of the location
  • By activating the fire alarm (pull station) near the Emergency Evacuation Sign
  • By calling if there is a phone nearby or use a cell phone as a backup (Note: Please note cell phones do not work in all areas of the campus)

Campus Safety have a full listing of the location points and either they or the fire department will respond to the location as soon as possible.
